I’m not a big fan of following trends, and usually I let them come and go. But I’m sure you’ve noticed that there is a particular type of four-leaf clover necklace which is absolutely everywhere these days. It’s seen so often, that even I couldn’t just ignore it, and felt compelled to dig a little deeper into it’s origins and more. My digging took me to the French fashion house, Van Cleef & Arpels, and in particular, to their Alhambra range.
Worn by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly, and more recently by Queen Camilla and the Princess of Wales, I wasn’t surprised to find that getting one for myself would set me back a good few thousand pounds. First designed in 1968, it seems to have stood the test of time, and has spawned an entire industry of look-alikes.
So why exactly is it so popular? Here are three reasons why I think that the four-leaf clover necklace is here to stay
.
1. Symbolism
The four-leaf clover has long been a symbol of luck, love, hope and faith. And who doesn’t need a bit of these things in their life? Wearing it is like carrying a little piece of positivity with you all the time.
2. Versatility
Four-leaf clover necklaces come in lots of variations, from the traditional to the super-sleek, minimalist modern designs, which I’m personally a huge fan of. If you want a vintage look, you can go for a carved gemstone one. If you’re looking for a more modern look without the Van Cleef & Arpels price tag, take a look at the silver clover necklace that I make right here. Although the clover shape is the same, everything else it totally different, so nobody will think you’re wearing a knock-off.

This type of necklace works equally well whether you’re dressed in jeans for lunch with a friend, or wearing that lovely day dress to a friend’s wedding. And if you’re into wearing layered necklaces, they’re quite simply perfect.
3. Elegance
The simplicity of the modern clover motif makes it a beautifully understated piece, and it really does give the wearer an air of effortless elegance. As Coco Chanel said – dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably, and they remember the woman. The design of this necklace ensures that the focus is on what’s most important: you.
Given the above reasons, we shouldn’t be surprised about the resurgence of the clover necklace, and I think that despite the fact that others are wearing them, it could make an interesting addition to your jewellery box.
